A cheap freelance visa offer in the UAE is often a warning sign, not a bargain. Offers on social media from as little as AED 7,000 for two years, or about AED 1,000 a month, have left buyers listed as partners in companies they know nothing about. A genuine freelance visa comes from an authorised free zone or government scheme, with a permit in your own name, and only the authorities can approve it.
This guide covers how the scams work, seven warning signs, how to check an offer before you pay, and what to do if you have already paid. It reflects reporting and official guidance as of November 2026. For legitimate prices, see our guide to the cheapest freelance visa in the UAE.
How Fake Freelance Visa Schemes Work
Khaleej Times reported the case of a Dubai resident who answered a social media advert for a two-year freelance visa at AED 7,000. The visa arrived within a week, so it seemed real. It was actually a partner visa with a company he knew nothing about. Two years later, at renewal, he found that the company had been blacklisted.
That is the trap. Some of these schemes do produce a real visa, but not the one you paid for. You may be attached to an unknown company as a partner or employee, without a freelance permit and without the right to invoice customers in your own name. Others simply take the money. One person reported losing AED 8,000 to an agent found on social media.
In late 2026, a well-known singer was arrested in Dubai for allegedly promoting fraudulent freelance visas, and Dubai's GDRFA and Dubai Police have stepped up action against these offers.
7 Warning Signs of a Freelance Visa Scam
- The price is far below published fees. Published licence prices in the cheapest emirates start from about AED 4,888, before the visa, medical test, Emirates ID and insurance. An all-in two-year price well below the real cost should worry you.
- Approval is guaranteed. No agent can promise this. Only the issuing authority decides.
- No free zone or authority is named. A real offer names who issues the permit, and you can check with them directly.
- You are told you will be a "partner". A partner visa is not a freelance visa. If a company you do not know appears on your paperwork, stop.
- Payment goes to a personal account. Ask for a company invoice from a licensed business that you can verify.
- It all happens over social media. Adverts on TikTok, Instagram or WhatsApp with no office, licence or contract are a common pattern.
- You must hand over documents first. Sending your passport and Emirates ID to a stranger also risks data theft and misuse of your identity.
Real Freelance Visa vs Fake Offer
| Genuine route | Warning sign | |
|---|---|---|
| Issued by | An authorised free zone or government scheme | An unnamed agent or an unknown company |
| In your name | Freelance permit or licence | Partner or employee of a company |
| Price | Itemised, with permit, visa and medical costs | One low price with no breakdown |
| Payment | To a licensed entity, with an invoice | To a personal account or cash |
| Renewal | Clear, with permit renewal usually yearly | Not explained |
One advisor quoted by Khaleej Times noted that the visa may run for two years while the freelance permit must be renewed every year, so ask for the renewal cost too. Requirements and prices differ by free zone.
How to Check a Freelance Visa Offer Before You Pay
- Ask who issues the permit, then confirm with that free zone or authority using contact details from its official website, not those the agent gives you.
- Check the seller's trade licence and ask what entity will invoice you.
- Ask for the full cost in writing: permit, visa, medical test, Emirates ID, insurance and renewal.
- Read every document. Your name should be on the permit. Question any company name you do not recognise.
- After issue, check your visa and sponsor on the official GDRFA or ICP channels.
What to Do If You Have Already Paid
- Act immediately. Contact your bank, card issuer or exchange house and ask for a payment recall, chargeback or fraud investigation. Recovery is possible in some cases, but depends on how you paid and how fast you report it.
- Stop paying and keep everything: screenshots, adverts, chats, receipts and account details.
- Report it. In Dubai, use the Dubai Police app, the eCrime platform or the non-emergency number 901. In Abu Dhabi, the Aman service is available.
- Check your status. If a visa was issued, find out who sponsors you, because being tied to a blacklisted company can cause fines and renewal problems.
- Get proper advice before you sign up with anyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions
Some cheap offers are scams, and others produce a real visa that is not a freelance visa, such as a partner visa with an unknown company. Genuine low-cost permits exist, but they come from authorised issuers with an itemised price.
Legitimate freelance permits come from authorised free zones and government schemes. Reports quoted advisors saying freelance visas can only be issued by certain free zones, so confirm the issuer directly before paying.
A partner visa ties you to a company as a shareholder. A freelance permit is in your own name. With a partner visa, you may be exposed to that company's problems, including fines or a blacklisting.
Confirm the permit with the issuing free zone using its official contact details, and check your visa and sponsor on the official GDRFA or ICP channels.
Sometimes. It depends on how you paid, how quickly you report it and whether the funds have moved. Contact your bank at once and report it to the police.
Use the Dubai Police app, the eCrime platform or the non-emergency number 901. Keep screenshots, chats and payment records.
